British Designer Antony Price, Renowned for Creating Looks for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer behind some of the most iconic looks associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.
Price was best known for his architectural shapes and theatrical styles, most notably the pastel suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."
This news arrives shortly after he unveiled his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "dress" once worn by Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he began designing men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to merge menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in designing body-hugging looks established him as a "genuine original," as stated by the UK's fashion authority.
During the nineties, he started creating pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including several ensembles for her US tour following her marriage.
With a vocation that covered half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
- Sculpted Silhouettes: Central to his design philosophy.
- Theatrical Flair: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
- Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
- A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.
The industry says farewell to a authentic original whose impact on fashion and music remains indelibly etched.
