Educator Slain and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Armed Clash at Nigerian School
Armed assailants have taken the life of an instructor and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an attack on a girls' secondary school in the northwestern part of Nigeria, police reports indicate.
The armed faction breached the public educational institution for female students in Kebbi State's Maga area at around 4 AM local time on the beginning of the work week, police confirmed.
The armed individuals "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a firefight" before breaching the school's outer barrier and abducting the learners from their hostel, according to a statement.
One member of staff was killed while trying to protect the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now being treated medically.
Observers recounted a considerable contingent of armed individuals, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to create fear.
Community members disclosed to media that the gunmen subsequently marched a group of female students into surrounding rural areas.
The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "additional police tactical units, in coordination with armed forces and community security teams" to the area.
A coordinated search and rescue operation is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and suspected escape routes.
