EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
