Information Available Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Shooting

A minimum of 16 people perished and more than 40 were hurt when assailants fired on a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police have called a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, authorities have stated the death toll stands at 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were taken to the hospital.

The deceased are still awaiting formally identified, but authorities state their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the individuals who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She described the moments before the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the shooting started. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, the Foreign Minister expressed that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, many remain receiving treatment, with several in critical condition. The injured comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Called a hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
