Israelis have assembled across the country to remember the second anniversary since the Hamas-led attack on 7 October 2023, as negotiations continued in Egypt over a conclusion to the war in the Gaza Strip.

The attack led to in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured away to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.

Israel reacted by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are seen as trustworthy by the UN and other international bodies.

"Our aggressive enemies have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister added on that day.

He also promised to "realize all the aims of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer pose a danger to Israel".

Memorial Events Across Israel

The national leadership delayed state memorials until October 16th - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still were held throughout the country on that day.

A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of Israelis killed in the Hamas assault was conducted in the coastal city. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast across Israeli broadcast stations.

Some time earlier, a minute's silence was respected throughout the country.

Peace Meetings in Egypt

At the same time, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams convened in the North African tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of indirect talks to examine the provisions of the proposal.

A prominent Palestinian official involved in the discussions indicated that an night meeting of mediated discussions commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.

The official explained the earlier meeting ended without significant progress, due to differences over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not restart combat after the initial stage of the arrangement.

He added that the negotiations are "difficult and have not yet deliver any real breakthrough," but pointed out that intermediaries are striving to close the differences between the conflicting groups.

Essential Matters in Discussions

  • A permanent halt to fighting
  • The trade of the captives still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The removal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Arrangements for assistance deliveries
  • After-conflict management of the territory

Citizen Sentiment

In the city's memorial area earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling endured the assault on the Nova music festival, where 378 people were lost their lives and numerous more were captured by Hamas gunmen - told: "Nowhere seems like home anymore and until each abducted person come back not a single person will be secure."

"Once we see everyone home again, we can breathe once more. Then we can start to recover," she concluded.

Outside the leader's residence in the capital, people gathered to demonstrate their solidarity for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel states 48 stay in captivity in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be living.

Demonstrator a participant stated: "We need do every compromise necessary for the hostages to come back home. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be protected."

Opinion polls now regularly indicate that around the majority of Israelis want the hostilities to finish in exchange for the liberation of the hostages.

Gaza Circumstances

At the location of Nova festival, mourners assembled to remember the victims.

From that location, the boom of military attacks and shelling could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where observers said the intense Israeli bombardment carried on.

In the urban center, bombardments were documented in the dawn of Tuesday in the western Tal al-Hawa, area and Nasr areas and in the eastern neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the northwestern area.

"When the dusk falls, the dread appears with it," relocated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose young son was died by an Israeli aerial attack last year, explained.

"We are fearful of the bombings. All the night we are sleeping together, clinging, particularly my little child who puts his head on me the entire evening."

"Every second we monitor the news to see developments. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be completed and that the war will return to us."

Health Emergency

The medical facility in the urban area reported it had accepted the remains of half dozen people by the afternoon, including three who died in an Israeli bombing in the south part district.

Another medical facility in the south region of that area said two more dead people had been transported. A person was killed by Israeli troops while looking for aid to the south region, medical staff said.
