Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their latest talk.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His family, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”

The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.

“Still unsure,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. And again, that reassures me, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”

New York police issued surveillance images Monday of a suspect in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack is currently under review and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.

The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday about halfway between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The assailant escaped.

Glenn shared Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a newborn.

“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that required surgery.

Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on early August and was carted from the field.

Boyd has remained around the team all season long while healing from his surgery.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “Certainly, he attends every game. He is completely involved. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of UT in 2019. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with New York in the spring.
