Larian Studios Details Its Application of AI Tools for New Divinity Game

The team behind popular RPGs like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin just shown its next major project, creating significant hype within the industry. However, follow-up statements from the company's figurehead have introduced a new dimension to the discussion, addressing the team's philosophy toward AI tools.

Augmenting Workflows, Not Cutting Jobs

In a recent message, the studio's founder explained that the company is using machine learning for specific preliminary tasks. These involve developing pitch decks, producing rough visual ideas, and writing draft dialogue.

Notably, Vincke stressed that the shipping material in the game will be created entirely by real artists. "We are creating everything in-house," he affirmed.

"We use machine learning to gather inspiration, just like we use Google and physical media," he wrote. "During the very early planning process we use it as a basic framework for layout which we then substitute with authentic concept art."

He continued, "Our studio recruits creatives for their unique talent, not for their willingness to follow what a algorithm proposes."

Vincke had previously outlined the team's targeted method to AI and ML, defining its use into primary functions:

  • Accelerated Iteration: Using tools to speedily create rough versions of scenarios to test concepts before full implementation.
  • Long-Term Aspirations: Exploring how AI could in the future enhance emergent reactivity, particularly in managing unforeseen permutations in a complex RPG.

He clearly stated that core creative areas — such as music composition — are not areas where the company is reducing human input. In fact, Larian is recruiting more in these exact fields.

"Larian is not shipping a game with any AI components, nor looking at trimming down creatives to replace them with AI," Vincke summarized.
