NY Unveils Reporting Tool for Public to Report Immigration Footage Following Detentions of Four American Citizens
The state attorney general has rolled out a new digital platform urging locals to submit images and footage of federal immigration enforcement across New York. This step follows a shortly after a high-profile enforcement action rattled NYC's Chinatown, prompting large-scale protests.
US Citizens Detained During Raid
A US congressman revealed during a midweek briefing that four citizens were taken into custody and detained for "almost a full day" following the enforcement action. Protests erupted in NYC on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
"All New York residents has the right to live without fear," state officials stated in a statement.
"Anyone who observed and documented federal operations recently, I urge you to share that footage with my office. We are dedicated to assessing these submissions and evaluating any legal breaches."
Form Details
The form provides fields to upload images and video footage of the raid, plus a section to specify geographic details. When submitting, users must mark a option that acknowledges that "authorities might employ any documents, photographs, or videos in a official report, such as in a lawsuit or government document."
Details of the ICE Action
The Chinatown raid, which witnesses say included over fifty government officers, happened in a well-known neighborhood of Manhattan where counterfeit products and other goods are sold daily en masse – frequently to visitors.
Recordings of Tuesday's raid reveal numerous covered and weaponized officers restraining and arresting a individual, and pushing back witnesses. Crowds of New Yorkers trailed the agents through the streets. An military-style transport was observed traveling down the city streets.
Political Response
During a news conference featuring the rights organization, the congressman, a Democrat, said that four nationals were arrested by immigration for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no circumstances where US citizens should be taken for no reason." He noted the persons were let go on Wednesday with no charges filed.
"There's a clear purpose here. It is not to take criminals off the street," Goldman stated. "This constitutes a militarized effort to create conflict. It is purely a pretext to incite violence for the government to bring in the troops to stop violence that they have created."
Extensive Outcry
Fury over the federal action escalated – all three NYC mayor hopefuls denounced the operation, along with the state leader.
"Once again, the current administration chooses authoritarian theatrics that generate terror, rather than security. It must stop," a contender wrote.
The city's immigrant rights groups spoke out as well.
"ICE raided the neighborhood with military-style vehicles, covered personnel and tactical gear to target small merchants trying to make a living. This operation had no connection to community security and focused completely on frightening communities and communities," said the head of a rights organization.
Official Guidelines
Agency rules forbids the detention of US citizens and the agency has said it will not take into custody citizens. Nevertheless, independent reporting has found that more than 170 American nationals have been taken illegally by federal agents since the start of the present government.
Recent Pattern
ICE raids have been becoming more common in NY and nationwide this year.
An October operation in central NYC was the first known raid on an immigrant shelter of the existing leadership. Protests opposing ICE are commonplace as are accusations of aggression and inhumane treatment.
Recently, a submission filed by legal entities claimed inadequate care of women with child in ICE facilities.
