The 2026 cars are expected to be more compact, agile and eco-conscious than this year.

F1 has unveiled the simplified vocabulary that will be used to explain the advanced features of its revolutionary 2026 rulebook.

The championship is implementing what is considered the biggest technical shift in its competitive history for the 2026 campaign, featuring fresh chassis and power unit regulations and the compulsory introduction of fully sustainable fuels.

The updated 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrids, which keep the 1.6-litre V6 configuration, boast a significantly increased energy storage, necessitating major innovations in the vehicles' aerodynamic design.

During grand prix events, drivers will carefully oversee battery power – potentially on qualifying laps – to secure the best lap time.

Extensive fan consultation were conducted with a mix of viewers, including long-time followers and newcomers, to identify which terms would make things clearer of the main elements of the new regulations.

The primary aim was to present a set of intricate features of the competition as easy to grasp as possible for the broadest viewership.

Consequently, older technical labels for certain devices – such as "alphabetical mode names" for the active aerodynamics – have been phased out in favor of straightforward terms that succinctly convey the real-world effect of the innovation.

Key Technical Innovations

Regulators explain that competitors will have increased agency to determine tactics regarding power usage, regeneration, and conservation.

The upcoming changes feature a range of settings that will be shown on TV overlays to enhance the fans' insight of the on-track action.

  • Attack Mode: This takes over from the present overtaking aid. It provides a short boost of battery power deployable when a car is close behind the vehicle in front to facilitate an overtake.
  • Boost Mode: This is a manual battery discharge from the energy recovery system that can be deployed for offensive or defensive moves. It grants the driver peak output at the click of a switch.

Both of these strategic tools will have to be deployed strategically, as the available electrical charge is strictly limited.

  • Active Aero: Both the car's wings move automatically – flattening on the long straight sections for minimal air resistance and increased velocity, and sealing in the turns for optimal cornering performance.
  • Energy Harvesting: The system can recharge the energy store with regenerative braking, or during coasting at the straight's end or in sections where only reduced throttle is applied.

What's Changing on the Cars?

The next-generation machines will be smaller and lighter relative to current models, with a wheelbase cut by 200mm to 3,400mm, car width reduced by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the minimum weight reduced by 30kg.

Total aerodynamic grip is projected to decrease by approximately a significant margin, although constructors will undoubtedly recover some as they optimize their packages.

Air resistance has been slashed by 40%. The cars will feature active aerodynamics – both wings will open on the straights to reduce drag and enhance velocity and click back into place for maximum cornering performance.

Pirelli tyres will keep the current rim size, but the tyres themselves will be narrower, by 25 millimetres on the front axle and 30mm at the rear.

Power Unit Revolution

The 2026 engines will have an near-equal balance in power produced by the ICE and the electrical system, a rise from about 20% battery contribution this year.

The ERS setup is streamlined through the removal of the Motor Generator Unit – Heat, the intricate and expensive component that generated electricity from the turbo.

Every car on the grid will be obliged to compete on fully sustainable fuel, created from organic sources or lab-created processes.
