The English Team to Start UEFA Euro 2028 Quest at City’s Home Ground
England’s men’s team will embark on their Euro 2028 journey at the Manchester City’s stadium, on the condition that they secure the expected qualification for a competition taking place in the majority of the UK and the Irish Republic.
Manchester City’s home ground has not hosted an England men’s game since eight years ago, when the Turkish team were beaten 2-1 in a warm-up game, but is expected to stage the England side for their first match on a Saturday in June 2028.
England are scheduled to play their concluding group fixtures at the national stadium, but, should they win the preliminary round, their last-16 tie would occur at the Newcastle stadium. Placing second would mean beginning the playoffs at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Championship Launch and Protest
The event was unveiled at an ceremony in central London on the previous evening. Key representatives from European football’s governing body and the organizing bodies were heckled as they approached the venue by about 50 protesters, who called for Israel to be removed from the sport because of the conflict in Gaza.
Banners were raised with slogans reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators chanted: “Kick Israel out.”
Championship Fixture List
The inaugural fixture of Euro 2028 will be held at the Cardiff’s stadium in Cardiff, on June 9, 2028, a fixture that will include Wales if they secure a place.
Wembley will host both semi-finals and the final, which will be held on Sunday 9 July with a start time at 5:00 PM.
It is hoped that an afternoon start, which will also be implemented for UEFA Champions League finals from the following campaign, will appeal to family audiences and help connect with a more diverse set of fans.
Host Nations
The Republic of Ireland are due to play their first game at the Dublin Arena and the Scottish team would do the same at the national stadium of Scotland.
The national sides of all four hosts will take part in the qualifying tournament; two reserved places will be set aside for any that do not reach the finals through the qualification path.
Locations and Elimination Phase
Villa Park and The North London arena finalize the nine tournament locations. Every stadium will hold at least one playoff fixture, with the quarter-finals played at the national stadium of each host.
The draw for the qualifiers will be staged in the Northern Irish capital, which was removed as a host city last year when it was revealed the proposed venue could not be upgraded in time, on a date in late 2026.
Official Statement
“It will be a championship for the supporters and a festival of everything we love about the sport – its passion and power to unite individuals.”
More than three million passes, a record for a UEFA European Championship, are projected to be made available to fans.
