When Swimmers Ran From Danger, Widely-Shared Photo Depicts Lifeguard Dashing ‘Pedal to the Metal’ In the Direction of the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent resident of Bondi, describes the iconic coast as her personal space. On that particular weekend night, she, similar to other neighbors, noticed pops reverberating across the suburb.

“Everyone did, but I thought it was daylight and no one could see them,” Ching states. Stepping out of her apartment, she witnessed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The looks on display signaled a crisis was unfolding.

While standing on the road, talking to a pair who had run up the incline soaked, she heard someone coming up from behind. It was a rescuer, sprinting to Bondi unshod from the adjacent Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while holding a life-saving kit.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I just saw this flash of blue,” she recalls. “He was zooming past. He was alone moving in the opposite way that everyone was trying to get away from, and hauling that big kit and unshod … He was sprinting towards something that certainly every fibre in your being would signal you to run in the opposite direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just fully pedal to the metal running.”

An Iconic Image of Heroism Amidst Tragedy

The photo that Ching snapped of the lifeguard, since identified as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as a prime example of acts of heroism in the following of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a second beach safety officer, says that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to back up the other members at Bondi, as well as to aid emergency personnel, police and paramedics attending to many victims.

Doolan’s account was a single example among several to come out of the local area, with the patrol base adjacent to the scene of the violence serving as a impromptu medical station. Waverley council, the governing body that employs many professional beach safety officers, remarked that the staff acted heroically from the moment the violence started until late that evening.

“There have been so many powerful stories, but the viral photo of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help preserve life is incredible,” said a local official.

“These individuals exhibit selflessness every day in keeping our internationally renowned coastlines safe for the public, but what we witnessed on Sunday should be commended.

“While we mourn and grapple with the horror of this heinous terrorist attack, I think it is important that we focus on just how much positivity we have witnessed in the face of such hatred.”
