Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the option to challenge certain decisions from the official, following the system currently in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent case took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
